Disaster to Masterpiece

Amanda made a trip from NY to Boston for some gigs and I luckily got the chance to work with her! Though the morning started off as basically a disaster it turned out to be one of my favorite shoots to date! I have a theory that at least one thing has to go wrong for the shoot to be successful & I'd say this was a huge success - I've been needing/wanting images like this for my portfolio for a while now. This was supposed to be an outdoor location shoot but it poured all day, I woke up late because I couldn't hear my alarm (I just upgraded my phone lol), there was a miscommunication with the makeup artist... just overall poorly planned which is something I am usually really good at. Any-who, I gave stylist Nicoletta some inspiration images beforehand and she made some custom pieces for the shoot because she is simply amazing! Here was our inspiration of photographs by Lara Jade (http://www.larajade.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/5.jpg)

& now here is our take on those (though I can't compare with Lara!) with basically no money and poor planning...

Hartstone Greenhouse

I have been graduated for about a month and I haven't done a fashion shoot in far over a month, maybe two! I was much overdue for one. However, I have been doing a lot of location scouting this past month. I scoped out some greenhouse locations and when I had talked to Lee about shooting I knew I had to get access to one. I drove a half an hour away to find one, only to find out there was an even better one three minutes from my house! Well anyways when I spoke to the owners they were completely open to the idea of me doing a photo shoot in their greenhouse and were very accommodating! They say the winter there is beautiful and full of poinsettias. So keep updated with me because come this winter I most likely will be planning something again there! With such short notice on this shoot we didn't have a stylist, but I think Lee, Erica & I did quite a good job putting our own things together especially with limited time and money! Leave your thoughts :)

So I've been slacking on keeping up with my blog. I promise I have a good reason... I was busy working on my portfolio so I could graduate! Well graduation has already come and gone, and now I'm in the real world D: !! I miss NESOP so much and it hasn't even been a full week since graduation. It was an amazing past two years for me. I shot stop motion of the hair and makeup being done and then had an actual shoot for my fashion class.

This was one of my favorite shoots of the year (along with Alice in Wonderland)!! I got to say it was a great way to end the term! Hopefully I get the opportunity to do crazy stuff like this more often in my final term at NESOP :(.

Here is a photo from Advertising term II week I that I never posted.

I was suppose to remake a photo by another photographer, and I chose to reshoot something else so most of these images were test shots. I pulled them up out of my hard drive and decided to see how it would look edited. After all she did an amazing job on the makeup.. it would have been a shame to let the files sit on my hard drive and not be seen!

Here is a shot, not taken with a lensbaby.. I had switched lenses with Mattie to let her try the lensbabies and I loved this window. I didn't know why at first but then when I was editing I realized it sort of reminded me of the album cover for The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me by Brand new. Once I posted it on facebook people pointed it out without me saying it. So I guess that must be what drew me to it!

I've been very up and down for the past few months. Today happened to be a very down day. No particular reason. I've been sitting on the couch editing photos and updating sites for hours and hours.. Its gone by fast but I've just been feeling sad for some reason.. Just when I was about done with everything and my mind is free to wonder Max comes running over and jumps up to cuddle with me. He started falling asleep in my arms and it just made me so happy, I had to take a photo with photo booth of course!

What is it about dogs? They always know when you need them.

You might recognize Brad's face from my earlier blog about Newbury Street. He was one of the random people I walked up to and asked to take a picture for a class. He was walking the opposite way on the opposite side of the street and I noticed his outfit and something told me to run over and get his photo. I felt like a complete nut but we chatted a little and exchanged business cards. He is the owner/creator of colorTHEORY (interior styling).

He later e-mailed me about head shots for Boston Home Magazine. I got the chance to go to his place to photograph him and his business partner Ben. They were both fun to work with (so funny) and the apartment was gorgeous! Though I was expecting to be impressed considering its what they do for a living!! So as crazy as I felt chasing people down the street my instincts brought me to a great opportunity to meet awesome new people and get some great networking. Funny how things work out sometimes. I hope to work more with them in the future :)

Week 7 of Editorial our teacher Steve Ostrowski sent us all out in the morning to shoot our projects. I went to Newbury Street to find well dressed people since my project is fashion. Of course being on Newbury St. that wasn't hard at all. I was pretty nervous at first to approach people randomly and ask if I could take their picture but as the day went on it got easier. I'm just so used to planning everything ahead of time so this was a bit of a shock for me. I got his point, I learned from it... I'm not 100% thrilled with all of the photos probably because I was rushing around (though Steve-O thinks they are better than what I have been handing in for class). I may even try it again just to step out of my comfort zone :).

Steampunk Shoot

Classes started last week so I haven't been able to update much but here is my most recent story for you:

Connell (also a photographer) and I had been planning to do this shoot for about 1/2 a year now. Finally we got around to it. He has costume pieces he collects for his annual trips to burning man and I love it :). We originally were set up at the TB Hospital in Hanson but once I had taken my very first shot a cop pulled up and started questioning us. He took all our info and made us leave. We ran into some people on the way out and they had given us the idea to go to Fort Revere in Hull so thats where we ended up. It actually worked out well because we both agreed that FR suited what we were going for better. So here they are, the long awaited photos of Connell and his steampunk gear.

10 Years of Friendship

So I met Hannah when she moved to my home town in 5th grade and we have been friends since. She moved our freshman year of high school to New Hampshire. We still managed to see each other when we could but over time it became less and less. Life took us in totally different directions and I haven't seen her in a year. Now she is moving to Florida and driving herself down there. So she made a stop at my house for a night. The last time she saw our hometown was when we were juniors in high school, now we are juniors in college! No matter how much time come between us, we have always been best friends. It was honestly like she never left, it has always been that way. While she was here we took plenty of photos so here they are:

We also took some videos while we were shooting. They are kind of funny, my remote release is so short! I hate it!!!

She is on her way to Florida as we speak, who knows when we will get to see each other again. All I know is when we do, it will feel like she never left in the first place.

We will just have to work harder so we can afford to go back and fourth between Massachusetts and Florida haha.

Several Art Mediums

Nothing too exciting going on lately. Only shot a little this past week, spent a lot of time with other art mediums like drawing and painting... which I'm not amazing at. I may shuffle through some of my old work from classes I took two years ago. Considering I haven't really drawn or anything since then! I have lots of old work from even before that lying around that no one really sees and I may want to put out there just for fun. Maybe they will inspire me to pick it back up again!

Here is some pieces I've been working on this past week:

Myself holding a sketch of Ville Valo I decided to do one night instead of sleep. Took me about an hour, pretty quick. Portraits are my favorite thing to draw. They are hard and I have so much perfecting to do but I just find faces more interesting than a bowl of fruit or something hence being a portrait photographer and all.

My friend Fred's mom gave me some peacock feathers when I went down to Uxbridge for Erica's previous shoot at the chasm. So last night, boredom struck and I've been meaning to photograph the feathers anyways so I did that:

Today I went to visit my friend at work. Down the street was a Michael's art store and I've been meaning to get paint. I wasn't going to go in - knowing I'd walk out spending more money than I had intended to in the first place. Of course I couldn't resist and I was right.... there was a sale on like everything! I bought paint, a small canvas and a cool looking vase to decorate my room. I almost bought more but I had to tell myself no! I started working on the painting tonight, I'm not 100% satisfied but I'm not much of a painter so I can only do so much...

I think it will look better on my wall looking at it from a further distance.

I may add to it or spruce it up a little.

Progress with the Holga

Since the wedding I did I had the money to develop some film! I meant to process a different roll but instead ended up with a roll I had shot in the beginning of the summer when I still didn't really know how to use the holga. I've only developed 3 rolls.. I'm working on shooting another one then I'll do a couple more. Its nice to see my progress with the camera though! These photos are a lot of trial and error, a lot of experimenting and mostly just a lot of having fun. I apologize for the terrible scans. I also converted some to black and white because it just looked better. I've been shooting color all summer. I will start shooting black and white once I'm back in school, then I can develop and print everything myself there rather than pay for it. Here is the best bunch from the three rolls in the order they were shot and a little tiny summary of them - however some are self explanatory or just side shots of other shoots I've done.

I got some cool shots of my friend Eddy from this past 4th of July I spent down the cape with some friends. I really liked them as a triptych.

My friend Anna had started a black and white film class in the beginning of the summer as an elective. She asked me to come shoot with her and give her some tips. So while I was there I took some photos with the holga, it was still very new to me.

A random shot I took at a park down the street from my home, still getting used to shooting with the holga.

I also spend a day at my aunt's boyfriend Ron's farm this summer. By this point I had a better understanding of the holga and how far away I should be from what I was focusing on and the quality definitely improved.

M-Dot's Shoot #4

M-dot and I have been planning on shooting again all summer. It's been tough to get a day with all the touring he has been doing. Finally we set an official day right before he leaves for his tour in California! It went really well, I love working with him he is so much fun. Our shoots are very spur of the moment and not that well planned out but we find something out of nothing and thats why we love working together! All of our shoots have come out altogether different, in a good way. It is always a surprise to where we will end up and what we will come up with.

After my shoot with Anna and my doctors appointment, I headed over to my friend Ashleigh's. Ash and I were best friends through high school. We had lost touch over the past year due to mainly school. I hadn't talked to her in almost a year, but it wasn't awkward hanging out again... well except at first when I was getting my stuff out of my car and almost fell, twice. haha. I'm still the same klutz I've always been. We always used to dress up and take pictures with our little point and shoots which may be where my photography could have even started! So we thought it was only appropriate to make our reunion a professional shoot with my D700.

Anna (aspiring writer) and I have been planning on doing head shots for a while but something always came up! Finally we set up a day but I managed to set my alarm for p.m. instead of a.m. (I got a new phone and still adjusting) so I overslept! lol. However, we got it done in about 20 minutes because I had to be at a doctors appointment. Here are the final results, just some plain simple head shots. I'm very happy with them especially taking into consideration how fast paced it was.

Erica at the Chasm

My friend Fred told me about this cool location close to his home. Of course I'm all about new locations so I drove down today with my boyfriend and friend. The location was really cool, although I was very unprepared for hiking in flip flops haha. We didn't venture too far in because lugging all my gear through a chasm wasn't sounding too appealing to anyone. The rocks were slippery from all the rain we got yesterday and there were so many people all over the place. I figured for the most part it was all very similar anyways. Maybe next time I go back I will explore more and find something interesting!

Then we moved into the chasm. Since its so narrow and the ground was extremely uneven I couldn't set up my light stands... so I got my handy human light stands to sit on a rock above :D.

Then later we went back to Fred's and his mom took out the horse for me, the sun was going down and I didn't grab my flash so its nothing fancy.

Tara and Brian's Wedding

I met Tara and Brian through a good friend. When they asked me to photograph their wedding a year ago I was so excited. I can't believe it was here already, perfect timing since I had just upgraded my camera. This was my first wedding and I surprisingly found myself very calm and not nervous at all (probably because they were awesome and not super stressed out). The Dock

I was going through my family set on flickr with my mom. I came across a photo I took back in december. I read what I wrote about it out loud to my mom and really felt it was worth posting here.

Thats my dad walking down the dock at my aunt's house. When I was taking it I made my mom and brother hold off from walking down behind him.

We went down to Florida for the death of my grandfather (my dad's father). My dad has been pretty quiet about it but you can tell he is really really down so when my mom was waiting for me to get the shot she told me she feels like crying because at that moment she thought about what my dad is going through right now. So that is what this picture represents to me and therefore means a lot to me.

Shooting with Jackie and Rob

So I didn't get to shoot at my favorite location today because by the time we got there it started down pouring pretty bad. I ran into the Visitor Center to get a map of the place and got pretty soaked. While I was in there I heard thunder and looked out the window and it had started raining even harder. I ran back to the car and we decided it probably wasn't going to pass anytime soon so we headed back home, I took some photos in the car ride home even though I was pretty bummed out. I didn't know it was suppose to rain that hard.

The rain had calmed down a lot by this point and it was actually very pretty.

My First Holga Shots

I've decided to start over here. My blogs were had too many words and not enough photographs so I deleted almost everything. Just left the ones I found important, don't worry I wont be posting anything super long anymore.

Just a quick update, I upgraded to a Nikon D700 and also ordered a new lens that should be here Tuesday (Nikkor 24-70mmf/2.8). :D

Since I had to wait until August for that I got a Holga 120N in the beginning of the summer just to experiment. I still have some rolls to get developed - lack of money is stopping me however.

RIP Grandpa 12/13/08

Its been a long past couple weeks... I've been working my ass off at school basically everyday the past couple weeks, my phone got stolen (they made phone calls to El Salvador costing 100$ but we got it all figured out with the company so no worries but I'll never see my, oh, BLACKBERRY CURVE again *tear*), my grandfather has been sick and passed away Sunday night :'(, finals Mon-Wed and now I'm flying down to Florida from Fri-Sun. for the wake.

I've never lost anyone very close to me, and though I very rarely got to see my grandfather much since he was in Florida and I'm in Boston, there was a closeness obviously and it hit me. Most deaths I've dealt with was when I was a lot younger as well. When I got the news I went straight to my room and cried and have been a pretty down about it but I hate telling people because then it gets all awkward and they don't know what to say, but there is really nothing anyone can say. When I heard he had been very sick I told my mom my dad should go see him because if he doesn't and he passes away he'll regret it for the rest of his life. So my dad went down last week and now a week later we are all going back. I'm just happy my dad got to see him before he passed away, I wish I could have. RIP Grandpa 12/13/08 Love You.

No time to waste

One day my cousin Lauren asked me to hang out. So we planned on doing a little photo shoot. I LOVE shooting with her because she is so natural and easy to work with.

Before I go on with the photo shoot let me tell you a little bit about Lauren...

She was born with a very rare syndrome called Treachers Collins. To sum up what that means, she was born without her cheekbones, jaw, and ears fully developed. Now that causes her eyes to droop, hard of hearing, small air way, etc etc. It doesn't affect the brain in anyway, it just becomes a lot harder for children with TCS (Treachers Collins Syndrome) to learn as quickly due to trouble with hearing and speech. However Lauren and her parents like many others who deal with TCS didn't let that stop them. She is a very smart, well-aware person. Keeping honor role in school she still has a normal teenage life.

Lauren dealing with TCS all her life luckily has a mild case. The reason I am posting this information is because I have a lot of people that message me with questions. Neither myself or Lauren take offense to such curiosity so don't mind asking questions just don't be ignorant, which sadly a lot of people are.

Heres the funny story about this photo shoot:

Ok now this photo shoot was a hectic day. It was never really planned until the day of and I as usual woke up late. I drove to her house which is only about 15 minutes away and got there at about 3. We went through her closet and agreed on an outfit after going back and forth on which skirt we wanted to use. The night before she was showing me videos on youtube on how to do old fashion and pinup hairstyles. I'm a cosmetologist anyways so I thought this would be a piece of cake since I can do it on my own hair. I tried a million different things and it just was not going well at all. Apparently I was wrong. So we just threw it together somehow and even though it wasn't perfect I didn't care since it had already gotten to 5 o'clock and I would be losing daylight time. I told her to do her own makeup really quick nothing fancy just make the eyeliner dark while I went outside to set up. We were shooting in a wooded area right across the street from her house so that was good that we didn't have to go anywhere. I notice my battery was low but I decided to use it for now since my extra one was in my case with my other lenses. We are shooting, its going well... I'm really excited because I like how they are coming out and then my battery dies. Yeah no problem I'll just get my extra one. Oh wait... its not there! Its on the flippin' charger at home!!! In a rush we get in my car to go to my house and get it speeding in hopes to make it back in only a half hour or so. Of course we hit traffic which is what I was expecting at 5:00p.m. We sat in traffic for 20 minutes completely not moving. Cars are turning around and I ask Lauren if she knew any other ways back to my house, but she didn't. Somehow she convinced me to go down a side road everyone was taking. All dead ends! I saw someone pulling out of their house and followed them because I figured they could take us out of the neighborhood. They did but we had no clue where we were... So we came up with a wonderful idea of following whoever was in front of us and hope they take us to a main road. Yeah dumb idea but we were already lost and it became an adventure. haha. Finally we get to a stop sign and to the right down the street was a set of lights to the left houses. Well everyone was going to the left so we did too even though I said there might be signs at the light. Almost crashing with another car as I took the left we ended up driving down the street for a good 5 minutes or so when I finally was like I need to go to those lights. So I turn around and hallelujah there are signs! I went towards Abington when I realized I knew South Weymouth a lot better so I again turned around towards S. Weymouth. I finally started recognizing the streets and was so relieved. It started raining! I was like oh my god please do not tell me this was all for nothing! It eventually stopped and we got to my house, I ran in, grabbed my battery and my Nonny (Italian for grandmother) was there and decided she wanted to come back to Lauren's house with us to wait for my aunt Lisa (Lauren's mom) to come home. Back in the car and we are doing good no traffic and bam more traffic. There had to be an accident earlier because there were lots of cops and ambulances. This time after we got through the traffic there was nothing. Lauren said there was a car stalled in the middle of the road but when we got up there the car was gone? Who knows, who cares all I wanted to do was take these pictures. So we get back to Lauren's at about 6:15 one more hour of day light, and not strong day light. Her hair had gotten all frizzy in the past hour so we put it in a bun because we didn't have time to waste. I finished shooting at about 6:45 and both Lauren and I loved the outcome of the photos!
